The air operations to clear terrorists bases sited in Daggu and Yazza areas of Borno State during the weekend have registered the expected results in the ongoing campaign against terror, says Nigeria's Defence headquarters. A statement by Chris Olukolade, Director of Information, said the mopping up operation by ground forces after air assault has confirmed the death of several terrorists located in the bases. According to him, civilians had earlier been evacuated from the vicinity of the identified terrorist enclaves in line with operation orders before the air and land assaults. He noted that extensive cordon and search of the entire locality is ongoing with a view to apprehending the wounded and other members of the terrorists group who might still be trying to flee. Meanwhile, on Sunday, troops in pursuit of the militants who carried out attack in Buni Yadi last week, had fierce encounter with the terrorists around Mainok and other locations between Apa and Abulum in Borno Stat

Auditor-General: Constitution Bars Us from Auditing NNPC

Appearing before the House committee to defend its 2013 and 2014 budget, the auditor-general had said 20 auditors involved in the audit were recently exposed to a specialized training programme designed to help them adequately examine oil and gas financial documents and audit NNPC's accounts. However, responding to a "Request for Audit of the Federation Account" by civil rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana, the Legal Unit of the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (OAuGF) stated that Section 85(3) of the constitution does not empower it to "audit the accounts of o

Smarting from the devastating attacks of the last few weeks, including the killing of 43 hapless students of Federal Government College, Bunu-Yadi, Yobe State, by the Boko Haram terrorists, the Nigerian security forces have intensified their ground and air assaults against members of the sect. The intensity of the raids on the insurgents is said to have forced members of Boko Haram to flee. However, reports indicate that the terrorists have became even more deadly as they flee, as they have gone on the rampage against civilian populations in the North-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. According to a statement signed yesterday by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, the latest onslaught by the military had been directed at clearing terrorist bases sited in Daggu and Yazza areas of Borno State, which he claimed during the weekend achieved the desired results in the ongoing campaign against terror. Fuel Scarcity May Worsen as Most Petrol Stations Run out of Stock

The current fuel scarcity in the country may worsen this week as more filling stations ran out of supply at the weekend. It was gathered from the managers of some petrol stations in Lagos that the few filling stations that had fuel, exhausted their stock at the weekend and would likely not have the product this week. However, the marketers disagreed with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that they were hoarding the product and attributed the scarcity to the delay in the release of the first quarter import allocation. According to them, the tight supply would linger until the marketers begin to bring in the  product, adding that the situation was worse in Lagos, because of its large population as the commercial nerve centre. Sources hinted that the situation was getting out of hand in some parts of the North, South-east and South-west, as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the oil and industry regulator appears to be losing the war against profiteering and

Air Transport: FAA to Visit Nigeria for Category 1 Safety Assessment

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) team is expected in Nigeria on March 31 to carry out mandatory assessment of Nigeria's Category 1 Safety Status certification which it awarded to the country in August 2010. While presenting the report, Isah noted that all major stakeholders took advantage of the public hearing to mak

Boko Haram: We Are At War – Jonathan

The Presidency Friday declared that the current military insurgency in some parts of the North-east "is an indication that Nigeria is at war". He has therefore called for the cooperation of all Nigerians to bring the war situation to an immediate end. Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe said, "We are facing a major problem in the North-east. We are in a war and there is no gain saying that fact. I'm willing to admit that we are in a war situation. Definitely, in a war situation, all sorts of things do happen. You can even see that in the centenary celebrations that we were doing yesterday; virtually every speaker who spoke mentioned the issue of insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria". He said that the war against the Nigeria state by the Islamic sect was very serious as they have adopted the style of "attacking the vulnerable – women, children and the aged". Catholic nun, 26, Pleads Guilty To Killing Her Newborn After Giving Birth In Convent

A trainee Catholic nun has pleaded guilty to smothering her newborn after giving birth in her room at a Washington, D.C. convent so no-one would hear him cry. Sosefina Amoa, 26, gave birth just five days after moving to the U.S. to begin a five-month program to officially join the convent. It was reported that on that fateful day, October 10, Amoa asked to be excused from her duties and went to her room. She delivered Joseph that morning. Afraid the nuns would hear her newborn's cries and discover she had lied about her s*xual activity, Amoa allegedly covered the crying boy's mouth and nose with a wool garment for several minutes. The young woman told police she didn't know what to do, and was afraid that someone would learn of her pregnancy. When she removed the garment, the child had stopped breathing. She wrapped the child in Samoan garb, placed the child on her bed…remained in her room' until the next morning when she showed the infant to a sister at the con

Mercy Ajisafe popularly known as Omo London was a model in the UK. She is an actress and also a presenter. She tells Ademola Olonilua about her love life and why she quit her modelling career You have scar on your ankle and wrist. What happened to you? I learnt the marks were as a result of an accident that involved me and my godmother when I was barely one year old. She had a mug of hot tea and being a restless baby, I tried to take it from her to know what was in the cup. I was trying to forcefully take the cup from her while she was preventing me from having it. Eventually, she left it and the tea poured on me. You can imagine how serious it must have been for me to still be having the marks on my body. My mother said it was the worst day of her life. While growing up, she used to tell me the scars would fade off but they are still here and I am okay with them. Did the scars ever discourage boys from approaching you? No, I don't think anyone notices it. I don't even reme

Power Sector Reform: Electricity Mess Persists As Consumers Lament Extortion

As Consumers Lament Extortion Unlike previous governments without genuine, determined efforts to solve the age-long electricity crisis which had plagued the country, the current administration of President Goodluck Jonathan seemed to have taken the bull by the horns with his transformation agenda including the roadmap on power that guaranteed massive access to electricity. With a fast growing economy and dynamic population of over 167 million people, demand for electric power has out-spaced supply tremendously. The sincerity of the administration in privatizing the power sector is not in doubt because in the last two or three years, a well thought-out power sector reform is being implemented almost to the letter especially with the unbundling of the octopus – the Power Handling Company of Nigeria, PHCN into separate generation, transmission and distribution successor companies. Undoubtedly, the power sector is capital intensive, needing huge financial and technical resources to tur
