Displaced Victims of Boko Haram  Besides the huge human casualties visited on the people of the North-east by the unbridled violence of the Boko Haram, lies the anguish of even the living, many of whom have been displaced from their hearth and home. Reports indicate that about 300,000 people, more than half of them children, have fled their homes in the North-east since May last year because of violence linked to the Boko Haram scourge, the United Nations said Thursday. Fugitive President Says He’s Still Ukraine’s Leader

Ukraine's fugitive president has declared he is still leader, just as dozens of heavily armed gunmen seized control of government buildings in the nation's Crimea region and raised the Russian flag. President Viktor Yanukovych fled Ukraine after riot police attacked protesters in Kiev's central square, killing more than 80 people, and European and Russian officials intervened. The moves pose an immediate challenge to Ukraine's new authorities as they sought to set up an interim government for the country, whose population is divided in loyalties between Russia and the West. Some 150,000 Russian soldiers carried out military exercises and fighter jets patrolled the border. "I have to ask Russia to ensure my personal safety from extremists," Mr Yanukovych said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies on Thursday. "I still consider myself to be the legal head of the Ukraine state, chosen through free elections by Ukrainian citizens," he said. Sho

North Korea Test-fires Four Missiles Into Sea

North Korea has test-fired four short-range missiles into the sea, Seoul's defence ministry says, in an apparent show of force to coincide with South Korea-US joint military exercises. A ministry spokesman said the missiles, with an estimated range of 200km, were fired off the east coast of North Korea. "Our military will maintain tight vigilance in preparation for additional launches or any military provocation from the North," the spokesman said. North Korea carries out short-range missile tests on a fairly routine basis, and has used them before to display its anger at the annual military exercises. Observers said the tests were unlikely to trigger a significant rise in military tensions. The South Korea-US drills kicked off on Monday, despite vocal opposition from Pyongyang which views them as rehearsals for invasion. This year, they overlapped with the end of the first reunion for more than three years of families divided by the Korean War – an event that has raised

This was the big mess that played out at a Redeemed Church branch  last Saturday, 22nd February, 2014. The Senate President's wife, Helen  Mark, was to play hostess at the wedding. The bride, Cynthia worked for her and  was said to be an orphan thus had become her adopted daughter. Guests got to the  venue of the big wedding at about 9am but 2hrs later, neither the bride nor the  groom came out. As guests started getting impatient, the groom came out,  took the microphone and announced to the surprise of all guests present that he  is no longer interested in the marriage… It later  turned out that the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, that was  sup

Jamaica’s Duo Powell and Simpson Know Drug Verdict in April

Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell will realise what ban, if any, he is to serve for a failed drugs test last year. The 31-year-old former 100m world record holder, tested positive for banned stimulant oxilofrine in June 2013 and faces up to a two year ban. Yunus Abdulsalam: Legal implications of suspending the CBN Governor

On the 20th February, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan suspended Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria. The Presidency premised the suspension on an allegation of "financial recklessness". Expectedly, the Nigerian policy went frenzy as the suspension raised eyebrows culminating into labyrinth of accusations and counter-accusations between those in support and against the suspension. For the records: Amalgamation of North and South was not a mistake – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday February 26, 2014 stated that the amalgamation of Southern and Northern Protectorates to form Nigeria was not a mistake. In a nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria's centenary, Jonathan praised those who ensured the peace and unity of the country. He specifically praised the nation's military as well as all citizens that have, in whatever way, contributed to Nigeria's growth and development. The President's speech reads: "I extend warm greetings and felicitations to all Nigerians as we celebrate our nation's centenary; a significant milestone in our journey to nationhood. "One hundred years ago, on the 1st of January 1914, the British Colonial authorities amalgamated the Southern and Northern Protectorates, giving birth to the single geo-political entity called Nigeria which has become our home, our hope, and our heritage. "I have often expressed the conviction that our amalgamation was not a mistake. While our
